Amherst County is located near the geographical center of Virginia with elevations from 500 to 4,000 ft and providing spectacular rolling countryside. Water is abundant from the James River to the many streams originating in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Most of the northwestern part of the County is part of the George Washington National Forest.
Amherst County was formed in 1761 from neighboring Albemarle and Fluvanna Counties. Named for Sir Jeffrey Amherst, the acclaimed "conqueror of Canada" and Governor of Virginia, Amherst is the seat of Amherst County. The climate is mild with an average annual temperature of 56 degrees.
