Old Rag/ Summer Time

And the Living is Easy.  We have been bombarded with the news of high oil prices as it impacts our summer plans.  There are so many wonderful things to do right here in Central Virginia-won’t take much gas to get the “fam”there and back.

Our family likes to hike Old Rag Mountain in Madison County, Virginia.  Parking is off of Rt. 600 near Nethers, Virginia.  It is a challenging hike but worth it when you see the views from the top.  Another route is to approach from the Berry Hollow Parking Area near Whiteoak Canyon.  Take 231 South past the turn for Nethers then South to Route 670 near Banco.  Turn right at Syria then left on 600.  The hike is along the Barry Hollow Fire Trail and then goes up to the top;  you can avoid a “rock scramble” by going this way.

Where do you like to hike?  Let me know.

I love Old Rag. It will definitely make my article of the top 50 things to do in the Charlottesville area. A good family hike for those with younger kids is Big Meadows near Loft Mt. (Afton). Another classic in this area is Crab Tree Falls. If you’ve never done the Rivanna Trails, you should take advantage of this in-city gem.

I agree with Dave on Crabtree Falls, just don’t leave the trail!
Riprap Trail off the Skyline Drive is another good one.

I applaud Barbara for still climbing up the Old Rag. I have not tried to make it to the top in many years, and I live right here in Madison. It is beautiful once you reach the top.

I applaud Barbara for being able to reach the top of the Old Rag! I haven’t done that for years and I live right here in Madison. It is really beautiful up there. I wish someone could drop me down from a helicopter so I could be up there again! I think Barbara goes up each year around her birthday!! Happy birthday - you go girl!!!
